The name “Gucci” is recognizable throughout the world by people from all walks of life. For many, it is synonymous with elegance and style. Gucci bags, whether handbags, shoulder bags or tote, are considered the pinnacle of glamour and style.
The History of Gucci Bags
It is not surprising that Gucci bags have attracted so much attention and fame. Bags were one of the items that inspired Guccio Gucci to begin the Gucci tradition. The original Gucci was born in 1881 as the son of a craftsman. He ran away to London, to avoid joining the family’s struggling straw-hat business. While employed there at the upscale and luxurious Savoy Hotel, he became familiar with the luggage belonging to wealthy guests.
He returned to Florence in 1921, to found the House of Gucci. This included a small shop that sold saddlery. It was from this workshop that the tradition of fine leather Gucci bags would evolve. Skilled Florentine craftsman were employed to make exclusive leather bags and distinct shoes decorated by a horse’s snaffle. Luxury luggage soon became part of the repertoire.
In 1947, Gucci introduced the most famous of Gucci bags which has become the company’s icon. This striking Gucci bag included striped red webbing and a bamboo handle. The red webbing, originally from a saddle’s girth, reflected the origins of the company and the concept of using unusual everyday items to create a distinct mark of fashion.
Jackie Kennedy Onasis put Gucci on the map when she was photographed with a handbag that became known as the “Jackie-O.” This Gucci bag sported the brown “double G” Gucci logo black jacquard fabric. The clasp included the famous red and green stripe, secured by the gold Gucci emblem clip buckle. The sides were trimmed with grainy black leather. These stunning contrasts of styles and fabrics caught the eye and imagination of the world and Gucci bags became a legend. Other celebrity women use Gucci bags: Audrey Hepburn, Maria Callas, and the Duchess of Windsor.
