Gucci History
Founded in Florence, Italy in 1921, Gucci was founded by Guccio Gucci who initially began operating a leather goods and saddle store. He began his career making leather bags for horsemen and diversified to luxury luggage as his clients graduated from equine transportation to horseless carriages. Guccio Gucci then traveled to Europe and London where he has his first glimpse of a cosmopolitan culture.
Gucci opened a shop in Via Condotti in Rome in 1938 with the finest craftsmen as his staff. Gucci himself designed many of the Gucci products sold.
By 1947 Gucci had become an icon in the fashion industry. During the 1950s the trademark red striped webbing was introduced, taken from its original form placed on a saddle girth. This became an emblem much like the leather moccasin with leather belt.
After Guccio Gucci’s death in 1953, the family took the company to greater heights by opening stores in Paris, Beverly Hills, London, Palm Beach and Tokyo. Gucci in the 1960s had become synonymous with absolute chic and glamour with famous Hollywood stars like Grace Kelly, Peter Sellers, and Audrey Hepburn seen regularly with Gucci fashion bags and accessories. And who could forget Jacky Kennedy’s famous photographs with a Gucci shoulder bag, which subsequently became known as the Jackie O bag.
Tom Ford took over the Gucci company as chief designer in 1990 and commanded a varied line of products including leather fashion, perfumes, colognes, cosmetics, shoes, suitcases, watches, jewelry, silk scarves, sports articles, ties, eyeglasses and sunglasses.
