The Gucci History
Gucci began as most purveyors of high fashion have, as a small family owned saddlery and leather goods store. The son of an Italian merchant, Guccio Gucci traveled Europe, in particular, Paris and London, where he gained an appreciation for the cosmopolitan culture he found there. Returning to his home in Florence, Italy, he opened up his first boutique in 1921 where he quickly built up his reputation by hiring the best craftsmen to create his products, among which were his fine watches. Gucci’s reputation for excellence spread across Europe and in 1938 he opened a boutique in Rome.
In 1947 he designed the company’s signature bamboo handle handbag, which is still in production today. With the help of his sons, Aldo, Ugo, Vasco, and Rodolfo, Gucci became synonymous with excellence in craftsmanship and style until finally in 1953, his boutique and his watches reached the shores of the United States in New York City. Sadly, this was also the year that the senior Gucci passed away. His sons took the helm and, in addition to New York, opened boutiques in Paris and London.
